Personal Statement
It was an afternoon near the end of the year when my parents got the call that I would have to take two classes again next year. My parents were in disbelief that I failed my classes, this was a huge disappointment and I didn't think about it much that summer. It was not until the following year when it hit me that I would be losing two class periods that whole year because I had to retake the classes I failed. It was all the same curriculum so instead of taking higher advanced classes I was retaking the same class not being able to learn new material. It was tempting to quit at times, the temptation to return to my old friends and knowing I was wasting my time in a class that I had already learned the material, but I learned from my mistakes I had caused the year before by not doing my work at the beginning of the year. Acknowledging my mistakes and having a growth mindset I started off strong, doing all of my work and strengthening my scholarly habits. The thought that I will one day I would graduate and make my family and myself proud kept me going in the correct path.
This experience showed me how I have to put my self-interests first and stay on track to success. If you're focused and reach for help you could achieve many accomplishments in life. I applied this into my daily life to overcome obstacles and by having the good self-determination I can be the scholar I can be and expand my knowledge. From that year on I have kept myself on track to graduate and haven't given up in my classes. From this experience, I have strengthened my scholarly habits, changed my mindset and achieved the value of determination.
Many people can have slightly different obstacles and setbacks but the ones that affect you the most is when it holds you back from your goals and could affect you in the long term but you have to have determination and self-discipline you can overcome it. For me, it was lowering my chances of going to colleges I deserve to attend. This adaptation to higher level education and realization of the consequences of my actions helped me build the character traits of self-discipline and determination as a scholar and in life.

Volunteer Service/Work Experience
Volunteer Service
I used to go to a summer camp named Zocalo but I got to a age where I could not participate in it anymore so I became part of the staff and volunteered in the summer camp for two years on my summer break. My job was to take a group of ten kids between the ages of nine to twelve. I made schedules and group activities for the kids to enjoy have fun on their summer break.
Work Experience
I got hired as a cashier at Dick's Sporting Goods. Few months in I was cross trained in most departments at the store. I learned how to sell credit cards and how to help the customer quickly and stress free. I quit in the beginning of April because.
High School Experience
I had just graduated from Strive Prep Lake Middle School so when my mom enrolled me to a Strive High School I was kind of bummed out. I wanted to go to Lakewood High School, it was easily 4 times bigger than Strive Excel. On my first day, I told myself I was going to make new friends I knew some of the students because they had gone to Strive Lake with me. I didn't make the best decisions in choosing who I was friends with. I was too caught up in fitting in to the point where I wouldn't be in class and I would ditch and when I would be in class I would get in trouble. I had failed two of my freshman classes and going forward in my sophomore year I had to retake them putting me almost a whole year behind the rest of my class. Sophomore year was a bit better for me, I didn’t hang out with my freshman friends that I used to but they would still be with me at times. I didn’t get in trouble as much anymore and paid more attention in my classes. I passed all my classes but they weren’t the best grades I could achieve.
In my junior year, Ms. Hernandez had been hired to work in the office. I had known her prior to working here because she was also the office manager at Strive Lake Middle School. Even though some teachers had given up on me, Ms. Hernandez knew what I was capable of and pushed me to do better than what I was doing the past two years. The following two years that she had been hired I did not fail any of my classes. I give Ms. Hernandez a lot of credit for that, she pushed me to do better but also got my parents more involved with my grades and classes. She taught me that I sometimes I have to put myself first instead of others and worry about my grades and how I am doing myself instead of worrying how much I fit in.
Even though I didn’t go to a big high school and get the full “High School experience” I loved that my classes were small. Some of my classes only had 10 total students in the classroom. I got to connect with the teachers and staff, everyone knew each other so well that teachers who have never taught me greeted me by name in the hallways. If I could do anything again I would go back to my freshman year, I would initially not waste my talent and join the school soccer team. I wouldn’t have worried about people who didn’t care about my well being, I would have passed every single one of my classes and do anything to get a good grade in that class. Now that I am graduating I look back at my high school years even though I regret a lot of things I realized you can’t do anything to change the past but I learned from it. I plan to go into moving forward with my knowledge and the skills I develop in my high school experience to succeed in college.
